Book Review on Meenu Mehrotra's LILACS BLOOM IN MY BACKYARD

LILACS BLOOM IN MY BACKYARD
by MEENU MEHROTRA

HAVE YOU READ ‘LILACS BLOOM IN MY BACKYARD’ YET???

I have known Meenu for quite some time now via Facebook. It was only after a couple of days later on Facebook, I came to know that she had her own book published way back in 2008. I had to get hold of her book and I did. Here’s what happened after reading ‘Lilacs Bloom In My Backyard’ >>~~>

~Lilacs~ Surely Bloomed In Mind… This book really touched my heart … deeply!
…(not for the heck of that she’s my friend now)…

The sky over San Jose reddened. It sizzled with misshapen clouds that seemed to throb with a precarious fury... It was late evening and the sun was about to dip into the crimson horizon. A sheath of drizzle, pearly and thin, fell outside on the lush dewy grass. Its sound was like a whisper to the ears, the lullaby of a mother crooning to put her child. – The beginning lines of the book.
Surely, the whole book is not like this… to some extent it is (with beautiful prose’s and fine details)... Reader won’t be disappointed at all.

What a debut by ‘Meenu Mehrotra’ … Hats off to her for choosing alternate sexuality subject, that too with simplicity and heart touching prose’s. I fell in love with Ramona (main character) and also with many other fine relatable characters.

This is one book to be read slowly ~> reading each and every word of it (you actually don’t feel like reading in a rush), the writer takes you straight to the streets of California then to India and then to picturesque Sydney (it’s all about relationships, be it with a lover, with your own sister, or your parents)… Meenu knows where she is, what she is doing and how she’s going ahead with the story.

The story is gripping to the core, you will be hooked from the very first lines and she does every bit of justice to this challenging subject.

I simply loved reading this book. This book will definitely linger in your mind for days for sure. Grab your copy now >>> Read it and… wait for her next one >>~~> SUNLIT Hearts

My Ratings: ☆☆☆☆1/2

Book Description:
Thirty-year-old successful interior designer Ramona falls in love with the suave Amit while on a holiday in the US. After their whirlwind romance and a hurried engagement, Ramona calls the whole thing off just days before the wedding, shocking her orthodox parents. Misha is a painter by profession and her lively face never betrays that she’s living in an abusive relationship. When things go out of hand, she confides in her good friend Ramona, who finds herself getting drawn towards Misha. They become quite close through the last stages of Misha’s marriage and Ramona develops a strong fondness for Misha’s twelve-year-old daughter Aastha. One scared and the other scarred by the rough tides of marriage, the two women discover each other anew and foster a bond to last a lifetime. Written in simple and touching prose, Lilacs Bloom In My Backyard is a coming-of-age novel for the urban, professional woman. It traces the self-discovery of a woman caught in the middle of tradition and modern life. New possibilities, new scents beckon her and she wants to, needs to give them a chance. The age-old ways of loving might just prove more fulfilling if she can choose who to love.
